A cartographic bodily mask fashioned from an unfolded sheath of paper - a terrain of stained edges forms a pathless page - seeped - multiple eye holes cut to function as to propose a disguise - a method to move from this world to the next. It is here that we see from within the artist's eyes - and what may appear as abstraction becomes concretion.
Presented as an edited mass of interconnected attempts - tests and tender discoveries - Orozco offers a harvest of retrospective processes, which collectively create an atmosphere of hope.
His materials are metaphors, where all media are transitory. Where cars become insects, cigarette butts blossom throned branches - footballs tessellate as a series of pebbles - carved as fossils. Bamboo stilts are refracted; ceiling fans hypnotise as vortexes. Where manuscript paper denote melodic renderings, intricate and diagrammatic, organic and evolving - as to read descriptions of sounds - traced within the linear cages of whales.
Dotted diagrams, noted as a tracery of some primaeval internal frequencies, yet detected and dampened as to redact information to usher a meaning and return to form. Not in character but in material - to revert to the tree which was used to produce the paper - to decompose and somehow return to a life played, not just lived.
Panorama collage of south gallery - White Cube - featuring 123 works by Gabriel Orozco.
